  • General Laborer

Big Island (Pahala, Naalehu, Ocean View, Kona, Waimea)

Multi tasking, client acquisition, project management, scheduling: all part of being an independent handyman who loves to use his hands as much as his mind. From building walls of a home, to constructing websites online, I've spent most of my adult life learning to bootstrap and DIY anything worth pursuing. After leaving my last position managing an After-School program, I found new ways to work and stay productive as a pandemic gripped the globe.

Renovation: (2020) My first project was the renovation of an old 1950's plantation style home in Naalehu, working with one other gentleman to restore rotten floors, replace drywall, refurbish windows, installing lighting fixtures, and of course: painting! If you drive from Kona into Naalehu, look to your right to find the only candy-cane-colored (red and white striped) house around! (Customers want what they want..)

    Supervisor: Manuel Marques
    (starting pay: $15/hour - ending pay: $25/hour )

Design & Construction: (2020) After diving into home renovation and making many observations, I decided I want to build my own small home. The process began as I self-taught myself 3D design and produced my first "digital blueprint" for an Ohana Home that was designed to be among the most affordable off-grid homes in Hawaii (mountain spring water source, solar system energy, and naturally composting waste). I am passionate about solar, wind, geothermal, and hydro generators as we move into a future that requires a careful collection of the abundant natural resources we have access to, when and where we have access to them.

Farm Labor: (2020-2022) Since I moved to Big Island in 2017, I've been volunteering on a 20 acre coffee & macadamia nut farm in Kau, learning the ins and outs of the coffee industry and food production in general. I've developed a green thumb and enjoy growing a personal vegetable garden thanks to my hands-on farming experience. This volunteer work also led to paid work picking coffee on other farms; for a short time I managed a picking team for a small farm, weighing their bags and paying out pickers their earnings and delivering the picked coffee to a mill for processing. I learned a lot about modern and traditional farming practices. I am proud to have worked on farms dedicated to producing food and coffee without the use of dangerous poisons and pesticides.

    Supervisors: Poco Compehos, Manuel Marques
    (pay rate: $25 /hour)

DoorDash & Instacart Delivery Services: (2022 - 2023) Nothing too extraordinary to say here, other than the job requires attention to detail, quality customer service, a good sense of directions and map reading, and the ability to make the right decision when things don't go as planned or as expected. This is not the most fulfilling work I've done, but the flexibility to work whenever I want to is invaluable, and the extra income is sufficient for paying necessary bills as we all must do to keep up with inflation and the high cost of living in beautiful Hawaii.

    (pay range: $25 - 50 /hour)

  • Freelance Copywriter & Web Designer

    Online

Various Small Businesses: From a young age, I've been interested in building websites, graphic design, and online product sales. My first steps were selling on eBay which later became a full time job for me. Along the way, I began writing freelance sales letters and ad copy for small businesses. This progressed into applied website design and construction, which I still love to do. I've cultivated in myself a love of learning, I enjoy working with technology, I'm a spreadsheet enthusiast, I enjoy solving puzzles, and I'm loving the new AI tools and machine learning products/services that are becoming available to more and more people.

    (pay range: $40 - 200 /hour)

  • Program Manager

    Pahala, Hawaii (KHPES School Campus)

After-School All-Stars Hawaii: Began working as an entry level instructor, promoted to Program Manager of the after school program. The program was designed to give teens a safe place to do homework, engage in fun activities, learn sports, cooking, and more. I personally managed program finances, hiring, employee training, and monthly reports to the board demonstrating what activities the after school participants were engaging in and enjoying. Very rewarding program to work with. I left this organization with a heavy heart after being directed by corporate management to take actions I believed would not be in the best interest of the children participating in the program at my school.

Supervisors: Director: Kaipo Hanakeawe, CEO: Kimi Takazawa, CFO: Paula Fitzell
(starting pay: $12/hour - ending pay: $55K Salary + Benefits)

    Denver, Colorado

Appliance Nation: Began at an entry level, making sales posts on eBay after taking pictures of inventory and writing accurate descriptions of parts and applicable serial numbers. Moved up quickly to manage the entire warehouse inventory and shipping processes. I learned a lot about the value of proper organization and customer service along with shipping rates and best practices.

    (starting pay: $12 /hour - ending pay: $45 /hour)

  • Delivery Driver

    Austin, TX & Denver, CO

Split my time between three jobs driving, one with Uber delivering people safely, another with Papa Johns delivering pizza, and finally with Instacart; I began with Instacart by delivering groceries in Austin Texas before moving to Denver Colorado where I worked in-Store at Whole Foods fulfilling customer orders and preparing orders for drivers to deliver.

    (pay: $2.50 /hour +tips @ PapaJohn's & $20 - 40 /hour @ Uber/Instacart)

Began with entry level phone sales outbound and inbound (AT&T). Moved to remote work-from-home click-2- chat AT&T mobile service sales and customer service. Worked with Digitial Landing helping clients find the best prices for what they want by bundling between multiple providers. Worked a phone campaign selling AT&T DSL and U-verse Internet services. • Final notes:

My whole life, I have been learning to better be able to stand firmly on my own two feet.

One of the most eye-opening sad-truths I observed while in school, during college, and even the professional working world, was how many people are willing to cheat, lie, and steal their way to academic and professional achievements. I've witnessed people pay others to take their tests, I've witnessed institutional kickbacks and "bribes" play a huge role in many peoples' professional achievements; it has always disturbed me, and still disgusts me, even if it is (as many people will tell you) "just the way of the world."

As a job seeker, I have in my youth eagerly gathered references, asking people to vouch for me, collecting character statements and full reference letters, only to see those "trinkets" completely ignored during the hiring process. Even worse was witnessing others gain jobs and promotions by using false references or getting friends to act as references, knowing they will only ever provide a positively biased opinion to potential employers.

After enough times experiencing that pain, I've disengaged from the practice as I've personally found it unnecessary; all I've ever needed is a chance to demonstrate my work ethic, and that alone has allowed me to stand on my own two feet and give employers/partners a chance to see for themselves that I'm a valuable member to have on any team that's working towards positive goals.

I'm of the opinion that references CAN be useful, but I have decided to ignore the opinions of others in exchange for the ability to ethically speak and vouch for myself.

With that said, please feel free to reach out to anyone you see on my resume; just know that I have not asked their permission for use as references, and there are specific supervisors I have worked for that I consider less-than-ethical after seeing how they operate behind their facade. I am not interested in slinging any mud, but will gladly offer you appropriate details (in person) about past jobs you may be curious about. Thank you for your flexibility and understanding that I'm coming from a place of having to deal with corruption and insincerity from people who were in leadership positions; it has left a bad taste in my mouth that I'm still working on getting out.

If there's anything unethical or dishonest about your business practices, this is your opportunity to recognize that I am someone who is interested in the truth above all, and you should avoid hiring me if you expect me to act without thinking about the greater good for all involved parties.

That which can be destroyed by the truth, should be. - P.C. Hodgell

One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we've been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We're no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It's simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we've been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back. - Carl Sagan

Thank you for your time! -
